Various Ways that could see the adoption of electric cars increase rapidly

MIT researchers have carried out a study showing various infrastructure that would see electric vehicles’ sales improve by a mile. That’s something that gets the attention of many given the outstanding advocacy for transitioning to clean energy cars. After all, transport energy is one of the highest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and more EVs on the road mean less of the emissions. It would really help with the matters of climate change.

One of the suggestions was strategizing the location of charging stations. In most cases, they are centrally located in places like shopping malls. However, it would be a great move if they were t install them in residential streets. People are always worried about EVs’ drive range. The fear would go away if there were supplementary vehicles or fast-charging stations along the road. Drivers would know that there is an alternative once the car battery dies. That’s especially if they are driving for long distances.

The researchers include Jessika Trancik who works at MIT as an energy studies’ associate professor. Others include Sankaran Ramakrishnan and Wei Wei who are a postdoctoral researcher and a graduate, respectively. Last but least, there is Zachary Needell who once did his doctoral in the institution. The findings were based on a wide array of data sets.  One of them is the GPS trackers data of various cars. There was also people’s input regarding how often they drive daily and why they do it. While the area of focus was Seattle, the rest of the U.S. was also put into consideration.

For the stakeholders to come up with strategic locations for chargers, the study would be of great help, according to Trancik. It gives them a clear understanding of energy consumers’ behaviour. They could tell the daily and annual consumption behaviour. She added that making electric vehicles the better option for personal cars would help make its adoption even faster.

The researchers studied people’s destinations and where they were coming from as well. They also gave a lot of attention to when they stopped. It is at that particular time that they could have charged their EVs. If that were to become possible, charging the cars without stopping doing something that you need to do, people would love these vehicles’ idea.

Researchers also noted that the existing drive range would inconvenience not many people. After all, they don’t drive that much. However, there is a percentage that would be bothered by the same. Others hardly stop hence wouldn’t afford to recharge. That’s why they need to be considered in terms of charging stations.

They acknowledge the improvement in battery technology but says it is not enough. The range issue is significant, and the proposed suggestion would help.
